COUNSELLING & BEHAVIOUR SUPPORT

Our Paediatric Counsellors and Psychotherapists support children’s mental health by addressing emotional, behavioural, and trauma-related challenges, while fostering life skills, confidence, and self-esteem. We provide compassionate, evidence-based care, including behaviour therapy, tailored to the unique needs of each child and young person.

We offer a safe and nurturing environment where children can explore their thoughts, emotions, and experiences, while learning practical strategies to support emotional regulation, positive behaviour, resilience, and overall wellbeing. As a neuroaffirming clinic, we celebrate neurodiversity and recognise that every individual experiences, processes, and communicates with the world in their own way.

Our approach is collaborative and family-centred. We work closely with parents, caregivers, and support networks to promote shared understanding, consistency, and meaningful progress across home, school, and community settings.

All our Counsellors and Psychotherapists have obtained a PACFA registration.

The following are some examples of goals that can be worked on in sessions:

  • Emotional Recognition and Regulation

Support focuses on helping individuals identify, understand, and name their emotions, while developing healthy ways to manage and express them. This builds greater emotional awareness, self-control, and the ability to respond thoughtfully rather than react impulsively.

  • Stress/Anger Management

Counselling helps individuals recognise triggers for both stress and anger and develop practical strategies to cope more effectively. This may include calming techniques, emotional release strategies, and tools to manage intense feelings in healthier and constructive ways.

  • Window Of Tolerance Expansion (WOT)

Work in this area supports increasing an individual’s capacity to cope with emotional discomfort without becoming overwhelmed or shutting down. Expanding the window of tolerance (WOT) helps improve emotional resilience, regulation, and overall wellbeing.

  • Social Skills

Support targets building healthy communication, listening, and interpersonal skills. This can include understanding social cues, building relationships, setting boundaries, and interacting with others with confidence and respect. For our Mini's and school-aged children, this can also involve skills such as turn-taking and parallel play.

  • Transitioning Skills

Counselling supports individuals in navigating changes and transitions, such as moving between routines, environments, or life stages. The focus is on building flexibility, coping strategies, and emotional readiness for change. For our Mini's and school-aged clients, this can also involve skills associated with transitioning from preferred activities, to non-preferred activities.

  • Conflict Resolution

Individuals are supported to manage disagreements calmly and constructively. This includes learning assertive communication, perspective-taking, problem-solving skills, and resolving conflict without escalation.

  • Procrastination

Counselling explores underlying causes of procrastination, such as anxiety, perfectionism, or low motivation. Support focuses on building organisation, goal-setting, and self-management strategies to increase follow-through.

  • Unpacking and Understanding Trauma

This involves gently exploring past experiences and their impact on thoughts, emotions, and behaviours. Counselling provides a safe space to build insight, process experiences at a comfortable pace, and develop coping strategies that promote healing and stability.

  • Delaying Gratification

Support helps individuals develop patience, self-control, and the ability to tolerate discomfort while working toward longer-term goals. This skill strengthens decision-making and emotional regulation.

  • Safety Awareness

Counselling supports the development of personal safety awareness, including recognising risk, understanding boundaries, and making informed choices. This helps individuals feel more secure and confident in their environments.

  • Navigating Transitions or Identity Development

Support focuses on exploring identity, values, and sense of self during periods of change. Counselling helps individuals gain clarity, confidence, and understanding as they navigate personal growth and life transitions.

  • Confidence and Self-Esteem

Counselling works to build self-belief, self-worth, and trust in one’s abilities. This may involve challenging self-doubt, recognising strengths, and developing a more positive self-image.

  • Impulse Control

Support helps individuals learn to pause, reflect, and choose responses more intentionally. This includes developing strategies to manage urges, follow expectations, and make thoughtful decisions.
